Greystead is perfectly located in the heart of the village, guests can walk to the famous Bamburgh butcher run by the Carter family for the past 125 years. One of Rick Stein’s Food Heroes, a visit is a must and you must try the famous Bamburgh Banger. Stock up on their pork pies (the best we’ve ever had) for picnics on the beach. Each morning they bake baguettes, scotch rolls and the Bamburgh bap, scotch pies & sausage rolls. There is also a well stocked cheese counter and lots of delicious puddings too. Order ahead or pop in (01668 214344; www.bamburghbanger.co.uk). On your way to Carters you will pass The Pantry, a really well stocked delicatessen specialising in Northumbrian produce. For delicious seafood, try The Mizen Court Hotel (01668 214254). We had lunch this January and we had an excellent lunch and they were very accommodating to four rather rowdy boys! Book early to avoid disappointment at the fantastic The Potted Lobster. Can’t recommend it more highly but you must book. Open for lunch and dinner www.thepottedlobsterbamburgh.co.uk (01668 214088).
There are many places to eat in Bamburgh, all within walking distance including the recently renovated Lord Crewe Arms which offers both a brasserie and bar area and fine dining. A well stocked village shop and grocer is 5 mins walk away.
Another Rick Stein Food Hero is located in Seahouses; Swallow’s Fisheries. The business is based in The Fisherman’s Kitchen in Seahouses complete and is with the original smokehouses, which have operated on this site since 1843. In fact, the site is even credited as being one of the possible places where the modern “Kipper” was invented. Order ahead or go and enjoy looking at their local catches (01665 721052; www.swallowfish.co.uk).
